From Day 1
Overall, Martin was pleased with the first practice.
"It's the first day but we are light years ahead of where we were last year at this time," Martin said. "The talent level is so much better. We are faster and bigger and we have numbers. It looks like a college football team now. We have a lot of work to do, but we have closed the gap."

Roster bolstered by players returning from injury
LAS CRUCES >> Doug Martin's second full recruiting class will certainly bolster the depth of the New Mexico State football team.
But the return of players who missed all of or a portion of last season could make a larger impact, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
Senior offensive lineman Andy Cunningham started the first six games of the season last year before an anterior cruciate ligament injury ended his season against Georgia Southern. Cunningham missed spring practice but is slotted in as a starter at right guard early on in fall camp. Junior running back Xavier Hall missed the last two games of last season and most of spring practice, but adds depth at running back and senior receiver Jordan Bergstrom steps in to replace graduated seniors Jerrel Brown and Adam Shapiro.
