LAS CRUCES - New Mexico State will open the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii against Davidson as the tournament's bracket was released on Wednesday.
The Aggies and Wildcats will tip-off on Dec. 22 at 9 p.m. Mountain in a game that will be nationally televised by ESPNU.
It will be the first ever meeting between NMSU and Davidson.
"I have a lot of respect for Davidson's program and Coach (Bob) McKillop," Aggies coach Chris Jans said about the matchup with the Wildcats. "He's one of the better coaches in America and he has a great reputation. We will have our hands full in that way. There's obviously a lot of good teams (in the tournament) and you play the team they matchup you up with.
"That's a long way off, but it's exciting to know that's our opponent and who else is in our bracket. It was certainly fun to hear about that."
NMSU will either get Miami (Fla.) or Hawaii in the second game of the tournament on Dec. 23 and finish the tournament on Christmas Day. NMSU has never faced Miami in program history and holds 15-4 all-time record against former WAC foe Hawaii. All games in the Diamond Head Classic will be on one of the ESPN networks.
