LAS CRUCES — Budget cuts are inevitable, and New Mexico State Athletics Director Mario Moccia knows it.
The New Mexico State Athletics Department has had nearly $1 million cut from its operating budget in the past two years. NMSU eliminated its equestrian program in 2017 to save costs, but another round of significant cuts would be a challenge, Moccia said.
“We already took the most drastic measure that we can take, and that is the reduction of a sport,” Moccia said. “That is by far the most drastic measure we can take. That option is now off the table. We are down to the minimum number of sports we can have (to remain at their current level). With another substantial reduction, we would certainly come up with something, I just couldn’t tell you what that would be today.”
