CHICAGO โ With the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting daily life worldwide, NM State Athletics would like to highlight the efforts of former NM State softball infielder Tiffany Autry who is currently a Nurse Practitioner fighting on the frontlines of the pandemic.
1. Where do you usually live and why did you decide to go to Chicago?
I moved to Las Cruces in 2006 from southeast Texas to attend New Mexico State on an athletic/academic scholarship. I have been living in Las Cruces since 2006 and now call it my home. I am currently in Chicago working on a crisis assignment as a nurse practitioner on the frontlines in the fight against COVID-19. I signed up for voluntary deployment and was assigned to Chicago based on the lack of staff and steady increase of Covid-19 in the area.
2. What is your title?
I am a doctorly prepared Nurse Practitioner with an emphasis in Family Medicine. I have primarily worked in cardiac and intensive care units prior to practicing family medicine. I own my own practice, Elite Dermatology, and briefly opened before COVID-19 hit. I completed a clinical dermatology residency program in Kansas after graduating and practicing family medicine.
3. What type of work are you doing?
I am working alongside FEMA & the National Guard as a nurse practitioner diagnosing, treating and managing care of patients exclusively with COVID-19. We are working diligently to slow the spread in one of the top hotspots in the U.S.
4. What did you study at New Mexico State?
I have 4 degrees from NM State. I earned my first degree, Bachelor of Community Health in 2010, while playing softball for New Mexico State. After my softball career was over, I continued my education in Nursing. I graduated from an accelerated dual degree program with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing as well as a Master of Science in Nursing Administration in 2013. After working at Mountain View Regional Medical Center, I knew I wanted to be able to contribute care to my patients in a different way and decided to further my education in order to do so. I earned my Doctorate of Nursing Practice with an emphasis in Family Medicine in 2018.
5. Do you want to say anything to the people in Las Cruces/Aggie Nation?
To my fellow Aggies & Las Cruces- Be a light in the darkness. Spread kindness and compassion wherever you can. It is a time to lift each other up and help each other through. If we each carry light within this darkness, before we know it, we will be on the other side of this stronger and closer together than ever before. For now, it is important for us to stick together while remaining physically apart and to be faithful over fearful. We will rise up and win this together.
