LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The official beer of NM State is quickly becoming one of the favorites in the state of New Mexico.
A collaborative effort between Bosque Brewing Company and NM State, Pistol Pete's 1888 Ale was launched in August of 2017 and in the almost three years since appearing in just four taprooms the beverage can now be found in over 300 locations in 70 cities around the state of New Mexico. Purveyors of Pistol Pete's 1888 Ale range from local restaurants and breweries to nationally recognized vendors such as Wal-Mart and Whole Foods Market.
Las Cruces (66 locations) and Albuquerque (57 locations) are the two cities in the state with the highest amount of businesses which sell the product.
"What originated as a 'cool idea' has blossomed into a tremendous branding vehicle for the University and the athletic program," commented NM State Director of Athletics Mario Moccia. "Partnering with powerhouse Bosque Brewing has been fantastic especially since Bosque co-founders Gabe Jensen and Kevin Jameson are alums of NM State. We'd also like to extend our gratitude to Greg Brown and his team from Admiral Beverage to promote and distribute the brand statewide."
As a result of a licensing agreement with NM State licensee the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), Pistol Pete's 1888 Ale has generated a considerable amount of revenue for the department of athletics since its creation. A portion of the funds generated from the sales of Pistol Pete's 1888 Ale go directly to supporting the Aggies' 16 NCAA Division I athletic programs.
"We are very excited about the growth of 1888 in draft and package," said Jensen. "We appreciate our partnerships with the NMSU Athletic department and Admiral Beverage Corporation. As a life long Aggie fan I don't know if there is another product I'm more proud of. To drink it on tap at games and in restaurants, and see the fight song on cans in grocery stores just makes me smile."
At the time of its launch, Pistol Pete's 1888 Ale made NM State one of just five universities around the country to have an officially licensed beer. That number has grown to 25 as of this writing. Currently NM State is working on a number of other beverage endeavors with local companies in the hopes of creating more Aggie exclusive drinks.
"Alumni from all over the state ask me where they can find it and are amazed with a click on the Pistol Pete's 1888 Ale icon on our website homepage can be pointed to all 300+ locations," Moccia continued.
