PrepStar Regional Scout says: Deunte Chatman is an exceptional class of 2015 football prospect from Summer Creek HS. Deunte considers himself to be very coachable and has shown the willingness to do whatever it takes to allow his team to be successful. Film review will reflect an athlete with exceptional quickness and aggressiveness. During his sophomore season Deunte played several positions and showed signs of a very bright future going forward. When asked to list his top three football related attributes, Deunte responded with the following order 1). Versatility 2). Elusiveness and 3). Strength. Deunte's athleticism was magnified by his recent showing at the Houston Nike Football SPARQ Combine in which he finished with the 11th best SPARQ rating out of 1400+ participants and 2nd best amongst class of 2015 participants. Houston Chronicle Article on Chatman:
Summer Creek RB Chatman eyed for another position at next level
Summer Creek's DeUnte Chatman, who had two 200-yard rushing games this year, is considered one of the top running backs in the Houston area. As a sophomore, Chatman played primarily at linebacker on the Bulldogs' varsity.
Chatman is being recruited by college coaches as much for his potential as a linebacker as he is at running back.
"If I would have played linebacker the last three years, I would have made the ESPN top 300," Chatman said.
However, Summer Creek coach Brian Ford feels Chatman's future may remain in the backfield.
"Potentially, he's an NFL running back," Ford said. "He runs really hard downhill. He has a lot of upside. He's being recruited on his athletic ability. He's 220 pounds, but he's fast. He's still learning the (running back) position.
"I'm still not certain what his best position might be. He has a great combination of speed and power. I think running back is his best position. What he winds up doing in college, I'm not sure."
There's no debate that Chatman is a gifted athlete. At 6-0 and 220 pounds, Chatman consistently runs 40 yards in the low 4.5 seconds.
"I wasn't fast as a freshman," Chatman said. "But I worked hard on it, and my speed drastically rose as a sophomore."
At the moment, the one college recruiting Chatman as both a running back and linebacker is Stephen F. Austin. It's the program that Chatman is leaning toward, and the Nacogdoches school is where an older sister attended.
"SFA has a good academic program for my major (business marketing), and it has a winning football program," Chatman said. "More of the bigger-name programs want me to play linebacker."
Chatman can see himself playing linebacker in college, even though he enjoys playing both linebacker and running back.
Defensive 'freedom'
"I like playing linebacker; it gives me more freedom," Chatman said.
Chatman is expected to make an official visit to SFA in mid-January. Other schools that have offered scholarships to him include Army, Navy, New Mexico, New Mexico State and Florida A&M. Maryland also has shown interest.
"I don't mind playing any position as long as it helps us win," said Chatman, who for the past two seasons has played exclusively in the backfield.
As a freshman and early in his sophomore year, Chatman played tight end as a reserve. Ford knew he had to get Chatman on the field. So during the spring after his sophomore year, Chatman was switched to running back.
"He wasn't starting, so he wasn't getting on the field enough at tight end, so we started looking for other places to get him on the field," Ford said. "We put him on special teams, started working him at linebacker.
"I started exploring other options. I had to get him on the field. I thought he'd be a heck of a running back."
Turns out, Ford was right.
Chatman's biggest rushing totals as a senior came in back-to-back games in wins over Kingwood (46-24) and at Conroe (56-36). Chatman rushed for 209 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries against Kingwood. At Conroe, he ran for 200 yards and five touchdowns on 25 attempts.
Chatman averaged more than 8 yards a carry in the Bulldogs' 3-7 season, a transitional year as they moved up to Class 6A. He missed the last two games with a knee injury sustained against College Park.
Chatman said the knee is not an issue now.
"He's a rare combination of speed and power," Ford said. "As a running back, he has a lot of potential. People don't realize how fast he is when he breaks into the second level."
Last summer at a Nike combine in Houston, Chatman excelled in strength and agility drills, receiving the top overall score for players from Texas.
'Hardest worker'
"I have knowledge of the game as well as speed," Chatman said. "I'm a hard worker. I'm the hardest worker in the room and on the field."
Not only is Ford impressed with Chatman's athletic ability, Ford is high on Chatman's academics.
"He'll be successful," Ford said. "He's definitely a hard worker. He's not a kid that is going to go to school and not put the time in to be successful."
