I just spent most of today in Santa Fe helping out a family member who has had there license taken over by someone else. Some how this family member of mine who has held a NM drivers license since the 70's, born and raised in NM, had there entire history with the DMV wiped out and replaced by someone else. That person is not in the US illegally, they are from another state previously.
New Mexico driver's licenses will soon no longer be valid to get into federal buildings and airports across the country.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has rejected a waiver for the state to comply with the REAL ID Act, which requires strict standards for state driver's licenses.
As of Oct. 10, DHS says visitors seeking to access military bases must present a proper form of identification that adheres with the REAL ID standards, such as a passport.
By mid-January 2016, anyone seeking access to almost all federal facilities in the state will not be able to use their New Mexico driver's license.
DHS will announce the timeline for enforcement of REAL ID in order to board airplanes by the end of 2015.
The state legislature will have to address the ID issue in the next legislative session or call a special session.
