BLAINE, Wash. โ The New Mexico State Aggies collected a "Three-Pete" on Sunday, as they won their third straight Western Athletic Conference Championship led by WAC Individual Champion Kennedie Montoya.
The Aggies clinched their third-straight title by posting a 3-over 291 in the final round at the Semiahmoo Country Club for an 884 and a 16-stroke lead over Seattle U. at 900. Utah Valley was third at 912.
The Aggies dominated the final round, halted 40 minutes because of thunderstorms, outdistancing the day's next best rounds by 13 strokes.
"I'm so proud of this team," said NM State head coach Jackie Booth. "We were concerned about the wet conditions, but they were just like ducks on a pond. From the very beginning it was theirs to take and they went after it."
Montoya, a sophomore from Thatcher, Ariz., claimed her first tournament win of the season with an even-par 72 to finish at 1-over-par 217, to win the individual championship by two strokes. It was the first Top 10 finish this year for the Aggie who was the 2015 WAC Freshman of the Year at Grand Canyon.
