LAS CRUCES โ There is no doubt Tyler Matthews has the arm strength and play making abilities to play quarterback for New Mexico State in 2016.
But Matthews is playing a game of catch up in a sense after arriving on campus two weeks ago after transferring to NMSU from Southern Mississippi as a graduate transfer.
"I wasn't here for the spring but I definitely came here to start," said Matthews, a former four-star recruit from McPherson High School in Kansas who signed with Texas Christian and transferred to Southern Miss in 2013. "It's been very tough. I know I'm plenty good but I've been behind some good guys. I know I'm fully capable to playing. I'm just learning everything I can but it's quick. Two months and we are there. I'm trying to get that chemistry going right now."

Interesting. From what he is saying, there is no way he would be happy with a backup role. I wonder what was told to him during the recruiting process.
