LAS CRUCES - Since New Mexico State's 2017-18 roster is not set yet, the Aggies and first-year head coach Chris Jans have not put much in schematically this summer.
The Aggies will do that, and implement a style of play, once the roster is completed when the fall semester begins next month.
"It’s (the roster) is still a fluid situation," Jans said. "We knew it was going to be when we first got here. Because of that, we’re trying to establish a culture and work ethic and terminology more than anything. We really haven’t put that much into summer just because we are still going to add some pieces to our team and not everybody that we signed is even here yet. It’s been more about a get to know each other type summer rather than establishing a style of play or a scheme.
"That’s just the way it had to be because of the situation with our roster.”
NMSU has one scholarship remaining following Lemarcus Lee's departure from the program this week, but Jans said they are recruiting continually and that they have to be prepared for any situation.
“Once we round out our team, once we finish recruiting and once everybody comes back for the fall semester, we will hit the ground running," Jans said. "We may be a little bit behind some of the other programs because of having the summer that we had. And I could have chosen to put more stuff in this summer, but we would have had to reteach it for the new guys. We decided as a staff that we were better served to wait until the fall to put in most of schematic themes.”
