There was conversation about the WAC and the Big Sky forming a partnership to combine some sports affiliates, although Hurd characterized those discussions as "up and down."
"They lost momentum, then gained some momentum. If I spoke on it today, it's lost some momentum again," Hurd said, adding that the Big Sky "held the cards" in such negotiations.
One possibility could be the Southland Conference, a similar league to the Big Sky in terms of it being an FCS affiliate for football. With that being said, it would provide more conducive travel for the Aggies when considering A&M Corpus Christi, Lamar, Sam Houston State, and Stephen F. Austin are Texas-based schools that make up some of the league's membership.
"It's not a conversation that we've engaged in," Boston said when asked about considering the Southland for membership.
While the Aggies having their football program as an independent would seem difficult enough, placing their non-football programs as such would be an even more trying venture. "To be independent in FBS football is an option we are considering," Boston said. "We are not looking at options as an independent athletics university. It's not a model we would choose."
All I can say is that Boston better have a card up his sleeve for NMSU. This doesn't sound good.
