BOISE, Idaho (Aug. 17)-The New Mexico State soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss at Boise State to open the 2012 season in the first match of the Holiday Inn Classic in Boise, Idaho.
At halftime, the match was tied at 0-0. Both teams had seven shots after 45 minutes of action, but the Aggies had a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore midfielder Katie Smith led the NM State offense with three shots in the first half.
"It was a really good game," head coach Blair Quinn. "It was good to open up against a team like that. They are a little more seasoned than we are. They play a little faster than we do, and that's something we have been stressing the last week of practice, the speed of play.
"We did some very good things at times," he said. "The important thing to us was we were better in the second half than we were in the first half. Any time you see progress from day to day and when you see progress within the game that's even better. I think we're on the right track."
In the 67th minute, Boise State scored the long goal of the match to take a 1-0 advantage.
The Aggies conclude the season opening weekend against Idaho State, Sunday, Aug. 19 at 11:30 a.m. in Boise, Idaho.
