LAS CRUCES - As an independent football program, New Mexico State University would seem to have a trying time ahead, if such a venture is doable at all.
Head coach DeWayne Walker believes it is doable, if a competitive schedule is established for the 2013 season.
Monday saw Western Athletic Conference Commissioner Jeff Hurd make it official, that the Western Athletic Conference would not be sponsoring football following this year, and New Mexico State Athletics Director McKinley Boston said the football program was preparing for an independent schedule in 2013.
When it was suggested to Walker that the Aggies wouldn't have a lot of leverage in formulating a competitive schedule, the coach responded by saying it was attainable. Requirements such as playing 60 percent of games against FBS competition, hosting five home games on the schedule (four of which coming against FBS competition, one of which can come against an FCS opponent according to bylaw 20.9.7.2 of the NCAA Rules Manual) and big-money opponents littered throughout the schedule are possible potholes to navigate around.
