LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State baseball team ended its winning streak at 14-games after falling 10-5 to Nevada in the first Western Athletic Conference game of the year at Presley Askew Field, Thursday, April 5.
The Aggies fall to 23-9 and 0-1 in the WAC while Nevada moves to 16-12 overall on 0-1 in league play. NM State has now dropped seven in-a-row to the Wolf Pack. The last time the Aggies didn't lose to Nevada came in a 10-10 tie in 2010.
"Streaks are fun to talk about when they are happening, but streaks come to an end," head coach Rocky Ward said. "We have to come back out tomorrow and get back to work."
The Aggies scored its five runs on eight hits and committed one error and Nevada crossed the plate 10 times on 13 hits while also committing an error. NM State left 12 runners on base during the game, which includes three runners left on in the bottom of the eighth as the offense was threatening.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning and the Aggies took a 2-1 lead in the second inning after junior designated hitter Cody Edwards hammered a home run over the scoreboard in left-centerfield. Nevada came back in the top of the third scoring three runs before NM State tallied a run in the bottom of the inning to make it a 4-3 ball game.
Neither team scored in the fourth or the fifth but Nevada put two more runs up on the board in the top of the sixth. The Aggies put up a run in the seventh and eighth but the difference in the game could have been that Nevada was able to put up multiple runs in three different innings.
With the score 7-4 heading into the eighth, Nevada posted a home run in each of the final two innings and the Aggies were unable to score with runners aboard in the eighth and ended the game with three batters coming to the plate in the ninth.
NM State continues the three-game series, Friday, April 6 at Presley Askew Field with first pitch set for 6:05pm (MT). The game is set to air on the radio on KSNM AM 570 with Jeff Matthews giving the play-by-play action.
