Minnesota went through the growing pains under a first-year coach. After spending most of his college career sharing duties as a wide receiver/quarterback, MarQueis Gray made the permanent switch to quarterback in 2011. The team fought hard in its first two games, losing to USC, 19-17 and New Mexico State, 28-21 before defeating Miami, 29-23. A tough loss to North Dakota State in Week 4 started a stretch of four straight losses. Minnesota snapped its losing streak with a 22-21 win over Iowa on Oct. 29 but then lost the next three before finishing the season with a 27-7 win over Illinois in the season finale. Three of the Gophers’ losses were by seven points or less.
